On August 11, 2024, Business for Kids hosted its first interview preparation event, and it turned out to be a huge success! The event aimed to provide valuable insights into how to ace interviews, teaching practical tips and skills that are crucial for making a lasting impression in any professional setting. From students preparing for part-time jobs to young entrepreneurs seeking internships or opportunities, our attendees came from a wide range of backgrounds but shared one common goal: to learn how to present themselves with confidence.
The day started with a brief introduction to interview basics—how to dress, how to greet your interviewer, and the importance of body language. Our team of experienced volunteers and mentors walked participants through step-by-step strategies, emphasizing the importance of preparation. We highlighted how researching the company or organization ahead of time could give candidates an edge. Many attendees were surprised to learn how much interviewers appreciate it when candidates show knowledge about the company’s values, goals, and mission.
After covering the basics, we dived into some more nuanced interview skills, like answering tough or unexpected questions. We worked on how to navigate tricky situations such as explaining gaps in a resume, answering “tell me about yourself” with a clear and concise response, and discussing strengths and weaknesses without hesitation. Attendees practiced answering common behavioral interview questions, such as “Tell me about a time you worked on a team” or “Describe a time you faced a challenge and how you overcame it.” These practice sessions were a huge hit! Participants enjoyed role-playing as both interviewers and interviewees, which gave them the chance to experience both sides of the table. This hands-on approach allowed everyone to refine their skills and receive immediate feedback from peers and mentors.
Throughout the day, it was clear that everyone was fully engaged and eager to soak up as much information as possible. The atmosphere was encouraging, supportive, and full of energy. Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many commenting on how much they learned and how they felt more prepared and confident for future interviews. They especially appreciated the interactive nature of the event—practicing interview questions in a group setting allowed them to build confidence while receiving valuable peer feedback.
In addition to helping attendees prepare for interviews, the event served as a great networking opportunity. Many participants connected with one another, exchanged contact information, and expressed interest in staying involved with future Business for Kids events. Building this sense of community was another highlight of the day, reinforcing our mission to empower young people with the skills and confidence they need to succeed.
Overall, the interview preparation event was a fantastic success. The hard work and dedication of the Business for Kids team paid off, as participants left with new skills, greater confidence, and a better understanding of what it takes to shine in an interview. We can’t wait to see how these young leaders apply what they’ve learned in their future endeavors. We look forward to hosting more events like this in the future, continuing to provide valuable resources that will help shape the next generation of business professionals.
